David Andres is a sixth generation San Francisco native. It was at Artworks that he was first introduced to a community of artists and began exploring hi creative boundaries. Two years later he left Artworks to begin the fulltime pursuit of his invention. Three years into the development of his hydrogen engine and in his 29th year a friend dragged him to Burning Man'97 where the candle of his creative interest was transformed into a torch of creative output. While continuing to develop his prototype he began to explore the creative side of motion and physical phenomena."Today, at 33, I'm three prototypes deep into my invention and have assembled a body of kinetic work that begins an interpretive discussion with the universe." Artists include Jeff Becker, Jesse & Glenda Drew, Mark Faigenbaum and Eleanor Kent. Jeff Becker creates large kinetic, motorized sculptures, which behave mechanically while exhibiting human characteristics. The oscillation of the water powered, torturous devices parallel the struggle between body and mind. Can each exist without the other? The balancing forces make the viewer aware of the existential nature of our society. Jesse and Glenda Drew are the creators of "Teller Machine", a mock ATM which disseminates bits of commentary rather than crisp bills to its users. This new media installation creates a dialogue about information and questions how liberally individuals interact with this "private electronic confessional". Mark Faigenbaum works with images from outdated analog machines merged with diagrams and visual information taken from natural and esoteric sciences. Overlaying images of currents, weather patterns and magnetic fields, he reassembles earthly patterns in a seemingly mechanical format, revealing the similarities between nature and machinery. Eleanor Kent is interested in using new materials in traditional ways to draw connections between the past and the future. Utilizing ancient methods of transforming a single string into a three-dimensional structure, Eleanor crochets with electro-luminescent wire and knits computed fractals to produce modern artifacts. Her work exposes a warm and embracing side to new technology. Crucible Steel Gallery is located in CELLspace at 2050 Bryant St. @ 18th (415) 648-7562. Gallery hours are 10am -10pm daily.
