Debbie: First, try to get kiln-dried wood, not the "treated" lumber that has a green cast to it -- it contains arsenic chloride/chromate. Then use water-based polyurethane to coat the wood and let it cure per directions. You'll have to go a few steps up from Home Depot wood, so check around locally. Also, stay away from woods such as oak and cedar in any case; they have more "oil" content. Cheers!
