That is pretty much what we are using now.  I want to get away from so many
boxes, and the space they require.  What I have in mind is flat-file cabinet
similar to an enlarged version of a map case.

I saw your answer to Sharon Buford, and took note that you need to store
objects of various dimensions that are not necessarily flat, such as hats.
Have you considered open wire metal shelving? ( Such as Metro-shelving). You
can make, or have made custom sized acid free boxes to contain the objects.
