PART-TIME MUSEUM MANAGER (JOB DESCRIPTION) Duties and Responsibilities In collaboration with the Board of Trustees: The Museum Manager shall be responsible for the daily operations of the Captain Salem Avery House Museum, a waterman’s museum on the Chesapeake Bay in Shady Side, Maryland, including opening the Museum during public access hours and days; computerization and maintenance of museum collection and other databases; assuring compliance with security, fire, health, historic and building regulations; and overseeing all maintenance of the building, grounds, and landscaping. The Museum Manager shall serve as Volunteer Coordinator, actively seeking new participants, engaging existing volunteers in needed endeavors, and working with committee chairs to assure adequate staffing for all events. In addition, the Manager will coordinate exhibits and events appropriate to the Museum’s mission. The Manager will seek and write grant proposals for all phases of the Museum’s operations including general operating funds, exhibits and events, education, and consultants, and coordinate publications, including newsletter. The Museum Manager shall act as liaison to museum, county, state, and national individuals and organizations. The Manager shall evaluate ongoing fiscal operations and propose new initiatives including, but not limited to, internships, fiduciary, and endowment endeavors. All duties and responsibilities of the Museum Manager are subject to the approval and support of the Board of Trustees. Other duties as assigned. Salary range: $14,500 - $17,500. Qualifications Leadership and communications skills required. Must have demonstrable interpersonal and public relations skills and work effectively with dedicated volunteers. Strong writing and computer literacy skills expected. Experience in property management desired. Minimum requirements: bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Preservation, or related field and at least one year in museum management preferred.
