CURATORIAL ASSISTANT Japanese Art Department Regular, Part-time, 20 hrs/week The Asian Art Museum is seeking a flexible, resourceful, and motivated individual to provide curatorial assistance and administrative support to the Curator of Japanese Art. The incumbent will assist in programs and projects related to the Japanese Art Department, including research, cataloging, acquisition, conservation, education, exhibition, registration, and publication. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled individual to actively support a dynamic curatorial department during an exciting time in the museum's history! Examples of Duties 1. Performs a variety of administrative tasks in support of the curator including scheduling meetings, making travel arrangements, processing time sheets and other operational documents. 2. Answers correspondence related to the Japanese Art Department; prepares and maintains operational records of departmental activities. 3. Assists with the maintenance and documentation of the departmental collection; assists in the classification, description, and interpretation of artworks. 4. Conducts research for identifying and interpreting the objects; writes interpretative and informational labels, brochures and other related materials as required; assists in the research and preparation for grants; updates and organizes files. 5. Assists in planning, developing and organizing exhibitions; assists in supervising the preparation and installation of artworks; coordinates administrative details of exhibitions as required. 6. Responds to requests for information about the activities and/or objects of the Japanese Art Department; provides assistance to departmental visitors and conducts tours for visitors as assigned. Minimum Qualifications * Bachelor's degree in Asian Art History; advanced degree preferred. Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. * Solid administrative and office skills. * Computer proficiency; knowledge of Microsoft Office. * Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong organizational, planning, research and presentation skills. * Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and good judgment. * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, visitors, volunteers and donors. * Ability to physically handle delicate and irreplaceable objects of art with extreme care. * Detail-oriented, meticulous and conscientious in following through on assigned tasks. * Knowledge of Japanese language and culture.
