As part of a master's thesis, I have installed a bar code system in two museums, The PanHandle-Plains Historical Museum and The Museum of Texas Tech. The collections at both institutions include paleontology, history, art, ethnology, and archeology. P-PHM uses a PC environment, and MoTTU uses a Macintosh environment. The system is working successfully at both institutions. I am now working at MoTTU to develop additional ways to use the system. At both instititions, we are using the system to aide with cataloging, accessioning, information requests, loans, and inventories (including condition reports). The bar codes are printed from the collection's database, without using a third party program, on object labels from a laser printer. My thesis was written as a how-to-manual and is schedualed to be printed in late Spring.
