Stephanie,
Also in the RDU area is the newly relocated NC State Museum of Natural Sciences.  The building is stunning and they also have an impressive collection of dinosaurs (Willo, the dino with the petrified heart).
And Exploris, a children's museums with a cultural focus, is worth the trip.
Raleigh has a surprising number of burgeoning art galleries, too, for a smaller metro area.  Try Art Space or Ant Farm.

Hope this helps.
Go Heels,

Stephanie,

The best thing to start with would be the North Carolina Museum of Art in
Raleigh if you're mainly interested in art.  There's also the Duke
University Museum of Art in Durham and the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel
Hill, which are nice, though smaller.  Other museums that come to mind are
the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh, and the North Carolina
Museum of Life and Sciences and the Duke Homestead and Tobacco Museum, both
in Durham.  All of these are worth a visit.  I lived in Durham for about 13
years, so if you have other questions and want to e-mail me directly you
can.  I'll try to help if I can.
