Free admission is a luxury some museums can't afford. Admission fees at our small, local history museum provide 1/3 of our operating budget. If someone shows up with no money, we rarely turn them away, however. I would like to see the day that all museums can be free. But for now we offer occasional free days, including every Saturday in October to celebrate Arts and Humanities month. Also one of the benefits of Museum membership is free admission plus two to five guest coupons per year. Short of laying off a couple of staff members, that's the best we can do. I've worked with another small local history museum in another part of Alaska that offered free admission to locals. Their 4 staff members are all part-time. Both museums charge $3 for adults with lower fees for seniors and children.
