DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH COLLECTIONS California Historical Society San Francisco, California The California Historical Society seeks applications for the position of Director of Research Collections to manage the North Baker Research Library and the Society's extensive photographic collections. This position offers an excellent opportunity to help the institution attain greater visibility and leadership in the state. We are looking for someone who is committed to serving the public through the use of the Society's collections. The Director of Research Collections will serve on the senior staff of the Society and will be a key player in developing strategic initiatives and plans that will help guide the Society in its programs and activities in the future. The successful candidate should have a background in one of the primary areas of the Society's collections. We are seeking someone who has experience as a manager and who can lead and motivate a small staff, consisting at present of four librarians and archivists. H/she should be able to work well with volunteers and other staff members. The Director of Research Collections will report directly to the Executive Director of the Society and will be one of four department heads who will manage the Society's programs and activities. The California Historical Society is an independent, non-profit educational institution committed to serving the public at large. The Society collects, preserves, interprets, publishes and exhibits materials about California. The North Baker Research Library collections include books, periodicals, pamphlets, newspapers, maps, posters, broadsides, manuscripts, scrapbooks, and ephemera. The photographic collection numbers over 450,000 items and includes a 40,000-item collection housed at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. The photographic collection is frequently used by a wide variety of researchers and authors. Preferred qualifications: MLS from ALA accredited institution, or MA or Ph.D. in History, Museum Studies, or related field; prior administrative experience in historical society or agency, museum, special collections library, or other not-for-profit organization. Experience or training in archive management, preservation, conservation, cataloging, grant writing, and fund raising will also be considered.
