Position Summary:

The Central Arizona Project Repository (CAPR) seeks a full-time Curatorial/Museum Specialist. The incumbent will be responsible for the coordination of collections cataloging by a team of catalogers. Cataloging activities include sorting, identifying, describing and storing objects as well as entering catalog information into a database. The selected candidate is responsible for maintaining consistency and accuracy in the cataloging process and ensuring that collections are consistently sorted, organized, and recorded by the cataloging team. Additional duties involve editing catalog records, collections condition assessment, preparing collections for transfer, and other curatorial tasks as they arise. The CAPR houses U.S. Bureau of Reclamation archaeological collections associated with the construction of the Central Arizona Project and other water projects in southern Arizona. The Repository is located in the downtown Tucson Federal Building at 300 West Congress Street.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates, supervises, and participates in archaeological collections processing and cataloging, including sorting, organizing, cataloging and packing specimens.
  • Coordinates, supervises, and participates in entering catalog records into database, standardizes cultural information used in data entry, and edits all catalog records.
  • Communicates and coordinates with other repository staff members.
  • Participates in collections maintenance tasks, object condition assessment, program planning, and other curatorial tasks as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Museum Studies or related field and one year of museum curatorial and/or registration experience; OR,
  • Five years of museum curatorial and/or registration experience.
  • Working knowledge of archaeological field and laboratory methods, Southwestern material culture, and archaeological collections care and cataloging.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Anthropology, Museum Studies, or related field.
  • At least four years of archaeological field/laboratory experience.
  • At least two years of supervisory experience.
  • At least two years of experience cataloging archaeological collections.
  • Working knowledge of prehistoric Southwestern material culture.
  • At least two years of data entry experience.
