Just to add a little bit to the writing sample discussion:  I was asked to
do a presentation to the staff as part of an interview.  It was suggested
that I could talk about recent research, but I hadn't really done any.  I
called and asked what the purpose of my making the presentation was, and
basically, they were looking for skills, not research ability.

I had another type of talk that I was able to make, and things turned out
fine.

It never hurts to ask why they want whatever they want.
