When I was working with docents in my previous position this was a
question that was frequently raised. We did not allow docents to use
laser pointers, however, several of them did choose to use a small
flashlight beam to highlight certain aspects of a work of art. Although
it is not as effective as a laser pointer, and it is still a beam of
light, my understanding was that occasionally using a small flashlight
in this way would not harm the artwork. You may want to suggest this as
an option.
