The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston has no collection, yet it is certainly considered a museum. -----Original Message----- From: Ruffin, Carrie [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: Friday, April 14, 2000 11:00 AM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: non-collecting facilities I disagree. I'm my mind, museums are any institution that supplies information on topics through exhibition, example, and activities in order to inform, educate, and entertain. This does not require a collection merely imagination and ingenuity. -----Original Message----- From: campbell [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: Friday, April 14, 2000 10:41 AM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: non-collecting facilities Why can't there be a new word for these institutions? They are definitely not just amusement parks. I would say that they are not exactly museums, either (as I would contend that if you don't have animals, you don't have a zoo). I think everyone would be much happier if we could define this institutional niche with a name (an accurate name) worthy of its often valuable and interesting efforts. Who better than the members of this list to do so? Chris Woodson wrote: > > k, I feel the need to respond to the "Disneyland" comment :o) -- Timothy L.
