"Hindsight, Foresight, and Insight" is the theme for this year's gathering being held at the recently renovated W-Chicago Circle Centre (formerly the Midland Hotel), located in the downtown area. Sessions begin at 1:30 p.m. on May 4, followed by the opening plenary session with Dr. Fran Blouin, Director of the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan. MAC is pleased to have Dr. Blouin address the issues facing a society with rapidly changing technology as archivists are being forced to re-examine fundamental issues about what constitutes the historical record. These issues are born of politics, social change, national definition, technology, and media, and provide points of departure for archival ponderings at this time in the new millennium. Many of the sessions will focus on the fundamental issues surrounding collection development, processing, reference, and outreach, the conference will also highlight areas of concern for the Midwest. A Thousand Acres: Documenting the Farm Crisis examines the issues surrounding the farm crisis in the heartland through the unique and interesting documentation projects of archivists, newspaper reporters, and a public broadcasting executive producer. Documenting "Middletown" -- Building an Archives of a Typical American Community examines the study of Muncie, Indiana as "Middletown," one of the most studied American communities based on the works of Robert and Helen Lynd that began in the 1920s. Face Off: A Report on the NFACE (National Forum on Archival Continuing Education) Project is an opportunity to hear and discuss the present and future state of archival continuing education. The broad range of topics covered in the sessions will generate useful discussion about the issues facing the novice and the experienced archivists at the turn of the millennium. Special events and tours will provide additional highlights. The opening reception will be held at the Thursday evening, May 4, at the Archdiocese of Chicago s Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Archives. Tours will include a variety of archival repositories as well as sites of cultural or historical interest: the Rosenthal Archives of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Auditorium Theatre, St. Patrick s Church, the Chicago Historical Society, the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies, a Chicago Skyscraper Tour and the Gerber/Hart Library of gay and lesbian studies. To complement the sessions offered at the conference, a variety of pre-conference workshops are planned. MAC workshops include the "Fundamentals of Acquisition and Appraisal," "Genealogy and Local History Research Methods for Archivists," and "Introduction to General Management Expectations." SAA is also sponsoring its "Archival Cataloging as a Component of Description" workshop during the conference. The complete program is available on the MAC website at http://www.midwestarchives.org/conferences.htm. The registration fee is $45 for members and $55 for non-members, with additional charges for some tours and workshops.
