While I admire Deb for taking the time to explain so much about getting into the museum profession, I have to take exception to part of her comments in point 3. If you notice that I'm a museum registrar, you can probably guess what I'm going to say. >3. Think Small. This comes in two parts. First off, don't apply for that >director position straight off. Go for the executive assistant instead. Don't >go for full curator, go for registrar or curatorial assistant. Registration positions are not consolation prizes for would-be curators. If you want to be a curator, go for the curatorial assistant or even department secretary (if you have the necessary office skills) but don't think you're necessarily qualified to be a registrar just because the job description doesn't require the Ph.D. Deb's point, I think, was that you can't expect to start at the top. Accept that you're going to be someone's assistant for a while, and look for those positions for which you are qualified.
