                       APRIL IS ARCHAEOLOGY MONTH

April is Archaeology Month!   Sponsored by the National Park Service, a
series of public events will be held throughout Alaska to provide
information about archaeology and how to save Alaska’s past.

April is also the time for Kodiak’s Whale Fest.  This annual celebration
of the gray whales passage near Kodiak Island on their 10,000 mile
annual spring migration from the shores of Baja to the Bering and
Chukchi sea, takes place April 14-23.  For more information about
Kodiak’s Whale Fest, contact Susan Payne at 481-1719.

In recognition of both Archaeology Month and Whale Fest, the following
events are planned at Alutiiq Museum located at 215 Mission Road.  For
more information about any of the events listed call 486-7004.

Week of April  4 - 8  -   Archaeology Videos daily, all day in the
Museum gallery

Wednesday, April 5 7:00 pm  - LECTURE
Archaeology Month Guest Speaker - Dr. Lydia Black lectures on: Alutiiq
Villages of Old

Tuesday, April 11  Opening of Rural School Art Show

Tuesday, April 18 7:00 pm - Come hear John Active,  a Yupik
storyteller.  He will speak on Comparing Two Cultures: Alutiiq and
Yup’ik

Wednesday, April 19  7:00 pm - LECTURE & Slide Show: The History of
Whaling on The Kodiak Archipelago by: Michelle Bayes, Deputy Director of
Baranov Museum & Patrick Saltonstall, Curator of Alutiiq Museum

Saturday, April 22 Children’s activities - F.U.N. (Families
Understanding Nature) Program -10:00-12:00 at the Alutiiq Museum Gallery

Thursday, April 27 7:00 pm – Site Stewardship -  Attnention all
Setnetters!  Learn how you can help preserve Kodiak’s archaeological
sites!  Special tour of facility & slide show by:  Libby Eufemio,
Collections Manager & Patrick Saltonstall, Curator of Alutiiq Museum
