Internships At The The South Dakota Art Museum opened in 1970 on the campus of South Dakota State University. It is home to paintings by 20th Century illustrator Harvey Dunn, Native American artists Oscar Howe, Arthur Amiotte, Maria Martinez, and a selected collection of fine art from regional and national artists of the 20th century. In addition to two-dimensional art, the Museum has fine examples of ceramics and three-dimensional art. The Museum has a large holding of ethnographic art from North America including an excellent collection from the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota tribes. Additionally, The South Dakota Art Museum has an extensive collection of Pre-Columbian vessels from Central America. The South Dakota Art Museum’s collection also includes the Marghab Linen Collection of fine hand embroidered linens made in Madeira, Portugal, and original illustrations of childrens’ author and illustrator Paul Goble. The South Dakota Art Museum offers many volunteer internships for individuals considering or pursuing careers in museum work. All candidates with skills, interests or experiences relevant to museum work are eligible. Internships at the South Dakota Art Museum range in length from one to three months. It is expected that interns will commit to a set number of contact hours per week. Intern positions are typically project-oriented with interns working alongside curatorial staff. Students often arrange academic credit for their experience through their college or university. The availability of internships is determined by the needs of curatorial staff, considering exhibition schedules and the varying potential for challenging intern projects. Candidates may consider internships in several areas of the Museum, including education, exhibitions or collections. Interested interns should contact the South Dakota Art Museum.
