As museum professionals, we are responsible for protecting the cultural property entrusted to us. Unfortunately, uncontrollable events can damage or even destroy our cultural heritage. The International Council of Museums (ICOM) is conducting an international survey to assess the damaging effects of natural and human-caused (riots, bombs, vandalism, etc.) disasters that occurred between 1990-2000. The objective of the survey is to determine how ICOM can intervene in the safeguard of endangered heritage. The Museum of Texas Tech University, in cooperation with AAM/ICOM, is conducting the survey on a national level and will present the findings to ICOM. Furthermore, the Museum is developing a database on U.S. cultural institutions damaged by disasters. Being able to network with other institutions that have experienced the same kind of disaster and loss is key to the recovery process; however, identifying such institutions is often a 'hit or miss' process that relies on word of mouth. The completed project will allow cultural institutions, federal agencies, and relief organizations to identify endangered heritage more effectively and to communicate more efficiently in the event of a disaster. Your participation is vital to the success of this project and to the protection of our cultural heritage. If your institution, or another in your area, experienced a disaster in the 1990s, please send a contact person's name, phone number, and/or email address to: Amy Polley Special Project Coordinator Museum of Texas Tech University Box 43191 Lubbock, TX 79414 [log in to unmask] (806) 742-2442 ========================================================= Important Subscriber Information: The Museum-L FAQ file is located at http://www.finalchapter.com/museum-l-faq/ .
