Technology Learning Center Coordinator

        The Illinois State Museum Society seeks a qualified individual to
manage and coordinate a new technology learning center at the Illinois
State Museum Research and Collections Center in Springfield, Illinois. This
center will provide a model program linking the vast resources of the ISM
to schools, teachers, and students. This is a full-time position with the
Illinois State Museum Society. Full benefits; salary negotiable.  The
Illinois State Museum Society is an EOE/AA Employer.
        Applicant should have experience with MacOS, Windows, and Unix-like
operating systems, computer programming, and a strong interest in
technology-based education.  At least three years of experience in a
relevant position required.  Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline
such as computer science required; master's degree preferred.
Communication, planning, and problem-solving skills, adaptability in
computing techniques required.  Interest in and knowledge of natural
history, cultural history, and art preferred.  The coordinator will work
closely with a technology educator and other Illinois State Museum
administrators, educators, and curators.  Assistance from the existing
information systems staff and additional training will be available.
        The technology learning center, scheduled to open in the fall,
1999, will provide access to high-tech teaching equipment for scientific
visualization and modeling unavailable in any school; a permanent
installation of microcomputers (MacOS, Windows, and Linux) with live
Internet connection and scanning,  imaging, plotting, and printing
equipment to facilitate student and teacher research and training; video
conferencing equipment; and access to Illinois State Museum collections,
databases, and expertise.  The center will include scanning and
three-dimensional imaging equipment that will allow teachers and students
to analyze and image a wide array of objects from the extensive collections
in the Museum's Research and Collections Center. They will also be able to
use high-end equipment to immerse themselves in three-dimensional virtual
worlds and develop models and simulations based on real data and associated
research.  They will be able to generate hard copies of large-scale maps,
posters, and other materials developed in the center.  They will also be
able to save data, maps, text, images, etc. on a CD-ROM for use in their
own classrooms. Software to be used in the center includes, but is not
limited to: ArcView desktop GIS, Photomodeler, Blender, QTVR authoring
studio, PhotoShop, and Alias/Wavefront Maya for IRIX.
        Educational programs will cover topics such as effective use of
technology and Internet in the classroom; engaged learning; integration and
use of Museum and other Web modules with art, social science, and science
curricula; Internet browsing and research; Web-page development and design;
virtual reality imaging and modeling; GIS mapping; and content-based
programs in the arts, anthropology, and the natural sciences.  Content for
teacher and student training programs will be correlated with State goals,
standards, and benchmarks for learning and will supplement K-12 classroom
curricula.
