Visiting Project Coordinator, IMLS "Beyond the Basics" Program, and
Visiting Assistant Professor of Library Administration
Digital Imaging and Media Technology Initiative
University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign

Position Available:
December 31, 2002.   A full-time, temporary position at the rank of
Visiting Assistant Professor of Library Administration, funded for two
years, by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services program
on Museum/Library Collaboration.

Duties and Responsibilities:
This project will be a collaborative effort involving investigators from
the University Library (http://www.library.uiuc.edu), the Illinois Heritage
Association (http://illinoisheritage.prairienet.org/), and the Illinois
State Library (http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/library/isl/isl.html),
working closely to develop, implement and evaluate a model professional
training program throughout Illinois for the digitization of cultural
heritage materials.

The Project Coordinator will have operational responsibility for developing
and implementing all aspects of this model program of training in the
digitization of library, museum, and archival materials.  Specific
responsibilities will include (but not be limited to): project planning;
the development and teaching of training modules (both paper- and
Web-based) that focus on different aspects of digitization; organization
and delivery of workshops (including on-site, on-line, and at several
locations in the state of Illinois); and the development and maintenance of
a Web site to provide access to resources related to various aspects of
text and graphics digitization for libraries and archives. Training modules
will consist of instruction in the area of project planning, scanning,
metadata creation, materials evaluation, hardware and software evaluation,
storage and retrieval.  Additional responsibilities include working with
the project team to design and carry out the project evaluation; preparing
regular project reports to the funding agency, professional conference
presentations and publications related to the project; coordinating
collaboration with state and regional professional associations for
libraries, museums, and archives. This position involves some travel,
mostly in Illinois.

Qualifications:
Required:  Master's Degree (or higher) in an accredited program of Library
and Information Science, Computer Science, Museum Studies, or equivalent
experience in a related field relevant to the project; experience with
digitization methods (i.e., scanning print documents and graphical
materials for archival purposes); experience with format and metadata
standards for creating and managing digital information in a library,
museum, or archives setting; knowledge of and experience using library
online catalogs or other bibliographic index applications, word processing
software, HTML or XML authoring software, Web browser software, and E-mail
software; knowledge of and/or experience using metadata with collections in
a library, museum, or archives setting; knowledge of and experience with
current PC technologies, including current Windows operating systems, and
Web technology and standards; excellent interpersonal and written
communication skills.

Preferred:  Experience with professional education program development;
report and grant-writing experience; experience with leadership roles in
project coordination; experience with digitization of museum, library, or
special collections.

Salary:
Salary is competitive and is commensurate with experience and credentials.

Terms of Appointment:
Twelve month appointment; 24 work days vacation per year, 11 paid holidays,
12 days annual sick leave (cumulative) plus an additional 13 days
(non-cumulative) per year if necessary; health insurance, requiring a small
co-payment, is provided to employees (coverage for dependents may be
purchased); participation in the State Universities Retirement System,
which includes several private options, is compulsory (8% of staff member's
salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination); newly hired
university employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social
Security, and are subject to its deduction.
