In my former job at the Denver Art Museum I often used interns from local
universities. Most of our interns had a separate university advisor. They
normally kept a project/internship journal and wrote a final paper on their
experiences, and turned these into their university advisor. I never
assigned grades, but sometimes filled out progress reports or evaluation
forms at the end of the internship. Many of my interns came from the
University of Denver (they have a special relationship with the museum), and
I know they were assigned letter grades. Most of these interns came through
the school of art and art history, and their internships were classified as
art history. I did have some contact with the faculty supervisors for the
interns, but they were never directly involved in my intern's projects, and
never supervised them on the job. I usually interviewed interns as I would
an applicant for any other position in my department. I only took interns
when I had enough meaningful work for them to do, and enough staff to
supervise them if I could not.
