More Than $1 Million Awarded in Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services Grants

Washington, DC-The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the primary source of federal funds for the nation's museums and libraries, announced today that 24 of 35 applicants will receive funding through the 2010 Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services (NANH) grant program. The projects chosen for funding will receive a total of $1,023,857. For a list of awarded institutions, go here: http://www.imls.gov/news/2010/090710c_list.shtm.

"Through their proposed cultural, artistic, and scientific programming, these 24 institutions will reach and inspire thousands of people today and for generations to come," said IMLS Acting Director Marsha L. Semmel. "IMLS is proud to support their work."

This year, NANH grants will support public programs, professional development, and strengthen museum administration, and include:

”The organization Papahana Kuaola will implement "Museum On-the Go: Bringing Learning Experiences to the Classroom," which will connect science educators to third and fourth grade students through easily transportable "discovery boxes." Created, produced, reviewed, and approved by science and cultural specialists, these boxes will offer 2,000 students and 80 teachers on the Hawaiian islands of O'ahu and Moloka'i an opportunity to learn by touching scientific specimens and cultural artifacts.

”The Swinomish Indian Tribe in Washington State will use its grant to fund "Swinomish Journeys," a permanent outdoor exhibit, which will tell the tribe's story from ancestral times through the present day. The exhibit will provide a gathering place where community members and visitors will learn about and reflect on the yearly cycles of Swinomish life and culture.

”The Gila River Indian Community of Arizona will develop a comprehensive collections plan as a foundation for managing current and future archaeological and ethnographic collections. The project includes staff training to ensure accountability for all items in the collection.

”The Sealaska Heritage Institute will publish a cultural art catalog featuring Tlingit art held by the British Museum in London, England. Staff members will visit the British Museum to examine the museum's Tlingit art and to select items to be photographed. The resulting publication will include photos of the art and describe how the pieces relate to the Tlingit culture.

The next deadline for the Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services program is April 1, 2011. For more information, go here: http://www.imls.gov/applicants/grants/nativeServices.shtm
