I think I was the most recent person to bring up this issue, both here and
on the Registrars Committee list. I was specifically concerned with
allowing individuals to include collection images in personal home pages.

I didn't get a huge response, and not all responders answered all my
questions, but here's a summary:

3 institutions allow individuals to use images for personal web sites.

5 institutions do not allow individuals to use images for personal web
sites.

2 institutions charge individuals for restricted use.

5 institutions recommended restrictions if we decide to grant permission
to individuals. The suggested restrictions included:

- low resolution
- time limit
- specify no further use or sharing of the image
- specify that the image be purged after use
- specify that no encryption or watermark protection will be removed
- reproduction must include a credit line
- no alterations of image allowed
- allow thumbnail size only
- charge a fee

For now, we have decided to limit web reproduction of our images to
institutions which borrow said object for an exhibition. This "policy" is
not written down anywhere and will undoubtedly evolve as the need arises.

Good luck with this thorny issue!
