Over $1 Million Awarded in Native American/Native Hawaiian
Museum Services Grants

Washington, DC-The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the primary source of federal funds for the nation's museums and libraries, announced today the 22 recipients of its Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services (NANH) grants for 2009. The projects chosen for funding will receive a total of $1,028,035. For a list of awarded institutions, go to http://www.imls.gov/news/2009/090809b_list.shtm.

"I applaud these institutions for their commitment to their work and to their communities," said Anne-Imelda Radice, IMLS Director. "These grantees are doing important work to ensure that cultural heritage and knowledge is preserved and passed on to future generations."

This year, the NANH grants will support public programs, professional development, and strengthen museum administration, and include:

■ The creation of two special tours incorporating the Cherokee language into existing living history programming in the historic village at the Cherokee Heritage Center by the Cherokee Nation. 
■ The review and revision of current policies at the Tigua Indian Cultural Center and the development of a long-term strategic plan for the Center by The Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo of Texas. 
■ The documentation of a collection of approximately 50,000 images - prints, slides, and negatives - to create an accessible photographic archive at the Alutiiq Museum, the Koniag Incorporated's tribal museum. 
■ The development of a comprehensive disaster and emergency preparedness plan for the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture & Lifeways by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan.
