Several scholarships are available for the October 12, Bloomington,
Illinois, workshop, "Care of the Historic Site: Assessing Needs and
Implementing Solutions," cosponsored by the National Institute for
the Conservation of Cultural Property (NIC) and the Illinois
Heritage Association (IHA). The workshop will assist participants
in learning how to care for collections and historic buildings.
Attendees will spend the morning learning how to identify, assess
and address potential problems and the afternoon touring the McLean
County Historical Society's headquarters, the Old Courthouse
Museum. Afternoon tours will be led by objects conservators and
architectural conservators who will point out specific problems
common to many historic sites. They will advise participants of
low-tech, low-budget temporary solutions, as well as conservation
techniques for the long-term.

The registration fee for the workshop is $50. Two full tuition
scholarships remain for a member of the Illinois Association of
Museums. There are also several partial scholarships of $25
covering one-half the tuition fee, available to any participant.
These scholarships are provided by the Association of Illinois
Museums and Historical Societies and the Historical Administration
Program of Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Illinois.
Support for the workshop is also provided by the Midwest Registrars
Committee. The registration fee includes lunch and a handout packet
that includes the Conservation Assessment Program report for the
McLean County Historical Society. The Conservation Assessment
Program (CAP) provides federal funds to eligible museums for a
general conservation survey of their collections and sites. The
philosophy of a general conservation survey and how to apply to CAP
will be presented in the workshop. The McLean County Historical
Society underwent a CAP survey in 1991.

Faculty for the workshop includes two objects conservators and two
architects. Geoffrey Brown, curator of conservation and assistant
to the director of technical services at the Kelsey Museum,
University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor. He was responsible for the
collections storage renovation project at the Kelsey Museum and is
trained to perform surveys, long-range planning, storage management
and conservation treatment for many types of objects. Brown was the
objects conservator for the 1991 CAP survey of the McLean County
Historical Society. Christine Del Re is the founder of Del Re
Objects Conservation Services in Oak Park, Illinois. Her
studio provides conservation services of archaeological,
ethnographic, historic, and fine arts objects for museums, private
collectors and government agencies. She is experienced in the
treatment of objects, surveying, teaching and consulting. Del Re
serves as a CAP objects conservator.

Linda Grubb is firm principal of Linda F. Grubb and Associates,
Architects, a firm specializing in residential architecture and
historic preservation services. She is responsible for management,
marketing, client contacts, supervision of planning, design, and
preparation of construction documents. Grubb was consultant to the
Village of Barrington, Illinois, involving issues of city planning,
growth management and zoning. She has been a CAP architectural
conservator since 1990.

Philip Hamp is principal of Vinci/Hamp Architects in Chicago, an
architectural firm with expertise in building documentation and
restoration. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects
(AIA), Society of Architectural Historians and the Association of
Preservation Technology. Hamp was the architectural conservator
during the 1991 CAP survey of the McLean County Historical Society.

Care of the Historic Site Workshops were developed and are offered
with the support of the National Park Service. The support of the
Conservation Assessment Program by the Institute of Museum Services
has also contributed to these workshops. For information about the
workshops or about the scholarships, contact Patricia L. Miller,
