Good suggestions so far, and apologies if this has been mentioned.

But what you really need is a light box. This softens all the
illumination (no harsh reflections) and allows you to illuminate the
object on several sides.

There are also plans on the web for models made with a PVC frame,
though storage of these can be more difficult.

Also, for the lightbox you'll need some lamps that you can either
adjust or clamp to a table. Real photographers would use photography
lamps; you just need something very bright. Of course, if you're
concerned about color casts, you might want to invest in the proper
lighting equipment.
