Hi, Susan;

You CAN ask for an honorarium/donation in lieu of a selling price, but that won't let you off the hook for copyright violation.

You could give the posters away for free, and you'd still be violating copyright. Copyright is "the right to copy," not the right to profit from sales. You could be dinged for copyright violation for even producing the posters, and letting them sit in a basement with no distribution whatsoever (although, that would make it a lot harder to identify the violation...).

Bottom line, as Deb mentioned, with a few exceptions (the completely nebulous "fair use" clause being the big one), any reproduction of another's work without the author's consent could land you in trouble.

If a historical society attempts to reproduce a poster which it has created
from other sources ( a map and photos) but those other sources have not
cleared the copyright permission, can the society ask for an honorarium in lieu of
a selling price to avoid the copyright issues?
