DOCENT COORDINATOR
regular full time position


Join our dynamic education team as we embark on the most exciting time in
the Asian Art Museum's history!


As we prepare for the move to the New Asian, we are seeking a highly
organized, motivated, and resourceful individual to serve as primary
liaison between the museum docents and staff.  In addition to providing
administrative and management support to the museum docents, the
Coordinator will disseminate museum information to docents, and will plan
and/or conduct docent training sessions.

The Asian Art Museum docents are an invaluable group of 150 highly
motivated, committed volunteers who have completed a 3-year training
program.  Docents conduct adult and school tours at the museum, present
outreach talks in the community, and provide other program support within
the Education department.

Examples of Duties

1.   Provides administrative support and staff liaison for all AAM docents
and related volunteers; maintains relevant files, mailing lists, and
correspondence.

2.   Disseminates timely information to docents on current exhibitions,
gallery changes and programs of interest to docents. Assembles information
binders, images/slides and other materials needed by docents for tour
preparation; posts museum information on docent website and through weekly
email notices. Attends docent board meetings.

3.   Plans docent training sessions in collaboration with members of the
docent board, including gallery walkthroughs and background talks; conducts
periodic training sessions; seeks ways to constantly improve tour content
and tour techniques through training, public feedback, and mentoring. Also
assists docents in planning meetings and special events.

4.   Assists docents' Community Speakers' program in developing outreach
talks to promote the New Asian in the greater Bay Area communities.
Coordinates occasional talks and lectures at the museum by visiting
lecturers and staff that are intended for both docents and general public.

5.   Coordinates and contributes to plans for a new docent recruitment and
training program in conjunction with Education staff, docents, curators,
and the Society for Asian Art.

6.   Monitors and assists docents working in the Resource Center, Asia
Alive, group tours, and teacher workshop programs; works as part of the
Education department team and contributes to general department planning.
Minimum Qualifications

·    B. A. in Art Education, Education, Art History, Museum Studies, or
related field;
M.A. preferred
·    Two (2) years of related work experience planning and coordinating
educational or public programs in a museum, academic or cultural setting
that includes interaction with volunteers; or an equivalent combination of
education, training and experience
·    Demonstrated knowledge of Asian art, history and culture;
understanding of interactive tour techniques and/or theories of adult
learning.  Knowledge of an Asian language is preferable
·    Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of volunteer
management, including recruitment, training, evaluation, and program
administration
·    Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office
·    Strong organizational and administrative skills; high level of oral,
written, and presentation skills; excellent interpersonal skills
·    Ability to effectively manage, train, and motivate volunteers
·    Ability to actively promote educational programs through the
development of positive working relationships both internal and external to
the museum
·    Self starter with proven ability to manage and independently
prioritize multiple tasks while ensuring timely, high quality outcomes.
·    Ability to display good judgment, problem solving skills, tact, and
diplomacy at all times
·    Ability to work weekend and evening hours as required

Compensation

$38-45K annually with excellent benefits package*
