A very helpful book on roaches (and other pests) that advocates for safe
methods of control is:

Common-Sense Pest Control by William Olinksky, et al. (1991).

Hope that helps.

Subject: roaches

Our live animal cages are infested with roaches (the smaller species of
roaches). It seems they are breeding in the wooden part of the cages. We do
not want to harm the animals. We have reptiles, amphibians and arthropods,
mostly. Can anyone suggest a cure. Washing the cages thoroughly with water
has not helped.
