Wendy's suggestion of renting a generator seems like the best idea. Perhaps
looking for a local store that rents them and who would also be willing to
act as a sponsor for your event by donating the rental fee is an idea that
would work.

That said, any space heater, either electric or non-electric, will have
parts that are warm or hot to the touch (and kids can get small fingers in
places you would not normally expect.) You would have to find a way to keep
any space heaters corralled off so that no person or child would
accidentally get near enough to get burned. Could you use the hearth for
that perhaps?

If you do decide to use any of the fuel type non-electric heaters, be sure
to get one that has an auto shutoff feature if the unit tips over to reduce
the fire risk.

One of our sites is a one room school house with no utilities it is in
town
on its original site and used for programs only in mild weather (here in NJ

that would be April 1 - October 31 in the best of years) There is a hearth
but it is not safe to use

We would like to keep the house open for a 2 day event in early December
are
looking for a portable heater that is not electric and safe to use in a
small space The door would be open so it would have some ventilation but
still
somewhat confined It seems my choices are propane, natural gas, and
kerosene I
would like to hear form those who have had experience using any of these in

the historic building setting.
