While tobacco smoke MAY be the sole source of the odor, I'd advise you to
investigate whether the odor may be a product of deterioration/decay of the
rubber fabric.  It's just possible your object is galloping toward its own
demise while we worry about whether the odor is really second hand tobacco
smoke.
