I would not use tagging as the sole way of numbering an object--especially
those of the size you describe.  Tagging is a temporary solution, or a
convenience.  I have seen too many instances in which tags are removed for
exhibition, and then it is impossible to reunite the artifact with its
number when it is removed from exhibit (sometimes many years later).  All
but the very smallest of artifacts can be physically numbered, and you
should.

Remember:  A dinner plate cannot be tagged.
