If you contact the Security Dept of the J. Paul Getty Museum, they will
send you a copy of our notebook containing procedures, etc. We've had
annual earthquake drills for many years. The fire dept. and red cross
participate, we simulate injuries, damage to collections, test our mobile
communications and more, of course all in compressed time period.

Due to extensive work in securing objects on display & in storage, we've
not be affected much by earthquakes. But all our training paid off, big
time when two years ago fires raging north of us came within a couple
of miles. Emergency teams went into action almost automatically. Within
a three hour period, we had the moved all art out of conservation
buildings, into the museum proper, plus all their files & personnel files too.
The fire eventually came within 1/2 mile of museum property but the wind
turned it away.

Also, Louis Goldich, Registrar at the San Diego Museum of Art has many
good and cheap solutions for securing art works in storage. While we
felt pretty silly practicing, it has really paid off.

Best, Amy

Kristin - You should also try the Getty Conservation Center in Malibu, CA.
They are a leading authority on earthquake preparedness. I work for an
organization that has three historic house museum sites in Northern
California, and we consulted with the Getty after Loma Prieta to figure
out what we had to do to better protect our structures and the
collections within.
