Internships.
Although I had a BA, an MA, was teacher certified in two states, and had
taught in both informal (environmental, experiential) and formal (high
school) settings...When I asked why I wasn't selected for an interview I
was frequently told, "but you don't have any *museum* experience."
I did two 3-month internships and then started my first *museum* job a few
months later.
Making less than I did as a first year teacher, of course.
