Personally, my office is my castle. If I'm trying to get work done, I
don't want the public peeking in on me. Plus, I might be changing
clothes, talking to my gynecologist on the phone, or reclining back in
my chair in deep thought with my feet on my desk. And some days, I
just feel like a grumpy little gnome and want to hide in my cubby hole
and not deal with anyone, least of all, chatty tourists with
questions. I also think that people who do deal with the public all
day long need a private space to retreat that is off-limits to the
public lest they go stir crazy.

Now public work areas where visitors can see artifacts being prepped,
cleaned, or restored are a different thing all together. I think
that's a great idea, tho' depending on how it is handled, employees
can feel like they are on display at the zoo. (Please do not feed the
curators or tap on the glass. ;)
