EDUCATION COORDINATOR - Southern Oregon Coast.

The Coos Historical & Maritime Museum in Coos Bay-North Bend Oregon, seeks an energetic and creative person to coordinate and further develop its innovative schools program.  The program is closely coordinated with six area school districts and emphasizes relationships between abstract grade-appropriate concepts and actual local historical events and locations.  The position involves extensive contact and collaboration with local tribes, agencies, non-profits,volunteers, and active and retired educational professionals, and with grade, middle, and high school students. 

This is an AmeriCorps position starting September, 2010, minimum duration 11 months with a possibility of extension.  AmeriCorps provides a monthly stipend for food and housing during months of service, and a loan/tuition credit of $5,350 upon completion of 11 months.  For more details see AmeriCorps.gov.

Primary responsibilities:

Ensure strong conceptual links between program content and classroom learning;
Develop/revamp lesson plans, supporting materials, and field trip destinations as needed;
Develop familiarity with local cultural history and, to a lesser degree, with local natural history;
Assist museum staff in adapting exhibits to support programs as possible;
Schedule and deliver trainings for volunteers and teachers;
Coordinate program delivery dates and participants and ensure delivery to approximately 1500 4th and 5th graders.
Reinforce positive public perception of CH&MM.

Qualifications:

Excellent written and oral communication skills;
Coursework in Education, Museum Studies, Social Studies, or similar;
Professional manner and appearance;
Creative and imaginative approach to program development;
Able to work both independently and collaboratively;
Comfortable working with wide range of age groups.

Oregon's south coast is highly scenic and very remote; a car is essential for daily life.  The coastal forests, rivers, bays and ocean are a recreational paradise for hikers, backpackers, surfers and kayakers.  Giant redwoods, ski slopes and snowshoeing trails are all within reasonable driving distance.
