Occasionally I've written a serious memo, then for my trouble received a note
telling me to "lighten up": I find it a facile, dismissive, and annoying
(albeit effective) putdown.  But an injunction to "lighten up" after one has
tried to make a joke seems...well, odd.

But maybe that's just me... :-)
