MUSEUM EDUCATIONAL SITE LICENSING PROJECT
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

The Museum Educational Site Licensing Project is a two-
year effort to develop methods and guidelines for the
academic use of digitized museum-owned materials at
colleges and universities. A small number of selected
educational institutions and museums will collaborate in
good faith to agree on terms of capture, distribution
and use of images of works from museum collections, and
their associated texts. The project is undertaken in the
interests of exploring and promoting the educational
benefits of digital access to museum collections through
campus networks.

Our goal is to bring together interested institutions in
partnership: museums provide images and information;
educational institutions provide networked access and
test educational use.

Museums will make digitized images and information
available to educational institutions in the agreed upon
formats. Participating educational institutions will
have digitized images and descriptive texts representing
at least 2,000 works (500 from each participating
museum) on campus networks for research and education
during the academic year 1995-1996, with at least an
additional 2,000 works added during academic year 1996-
1997. Works included will be selected by museums on the
basis of criteria agreed upon for the study. Network
security will conform to standards set by project
participants.

Educational institutions are encouraged to propose and
explore a wide variety of educational and research uses
for the material. Once the two-year test is completed,
images and information will be withdrawn from campus
networks, unless subsequent licensing agreements are
enacted to allow for continued use. Images and
accompanying documentation will be provided without site
license or royalty fees during the project.

Funding for the implementation of the project will be
sought from public and private foundations.
Participating museums, galleries and educational
institutions are expected to contribute staff and
technical resources to the project. The first phase of
the project, including its planning and organization, is
being funded by the Getty Art History Information
Program Imaging Initiative.

The sponsoring organizations, the Getty Art History
Information Program and MUSE Educational Media, will
manage the project. They will also publicize the results
of the study and inform interested parties on a regular
basis of the project's status.
