Hi, Erin--The job market is tough, but I think one of the chief problems
with your stock application may be that that your cover letter does in
fact read like a "canned" cover letter. In fact, you've even got the
spot where you insert the name of the particular position you're going
after. What would set you apart from the crowd is taking the time to
get to know the organization to which you are applying. Rather than
list your accomplishments (which are, after all, right there on the
attached resume), focus more on the strengths that are going to be
particularly applicable to their individual, and unique institution.
Make your letter, and yourself, relevant to the person reading it, and
relate it specifically to the job announcement. While your
accomplishments are impressive, the market is tough and you're really
competing against a pool of people with similar credentials, so make an
effort to get your foot in the door with internships (while waiting
tables at night, if need be), which will result in real professional,
rather than strictly academic, recommendations when applying for these
jobs, and also become visible: join local, regional, and national
organizations directly associated with your field. Attend the meetings
(many offer scholarships to offset cost of travel), read the newsletter,
and start talking to people. You'd be amazed at what happens through
word of mouth, especially if you've demonstrated that you're thoroughly
prepared for the opportunity when it comes along.

All best, and good luck,
Christian
