Published American art scholarship of the 20th and/or 21st century.
Experience in presenting at conferences, teaching, conducting lectures, or similar experience.
Fundraising experience.

Job Description:
The University Museums at Iowa State University (Ames, Iowa) is seeking candidates for a Curator III to provide senior-level leadership in exhibitions, project management, collections development and management, public programming, education, and exhibition installations for the Christian Petersen Art Museum (CPAM). The CPAM, located in historic Morrill Hall on Iowa State University's central campus, is the nation's only academic art museum devoted to campus public art. Christian Petersen was the nation's first permanent artist-in-residence at any college or university and served in that position from 1934 to 1955. The successful candidate will have a background in American art, with specialization in post-1940 modern and contemporary art. 

The Curator of the CPAM and Christian Petersen Art Collection serves as the exhibitions and permanent collections curator, including scholarship, installation, care and conservation, and education duties of the Christian Petersen Art Collection. The CPAM Curator will work to create, conceptualize, implement, and evaluate curatorial and educational projects that fulfill the mission of University Museums. Project duties include development and implementation of fundraising strategies, exhibit budget and budget management, donor and public relations initiatives to fully use all available resources. This position in conjunction with Curator III (Art on Campus/Anderson Sculpture Garden) also oversees the CPAM Museum Security and Education Program Assistant (Program Specialist I), docents, and student intern employees. This position reports to the Director and Chief Curator of University Museums. 

The successful candidate must possess excellent interpersonal skills to effectively work with colleagues, artists, collectors, dealers, donors, and colleagues across departments, as well as campus partners. The ability to manage and execute a variety of projects simultaneously is essential. This candidate will be well organized, detail-oriented, and have excellent strategic and logistical planning/implementation skills with the proven ability to handle a variety of administrative, exhibition installation, educational, and artistic responsibilities.

Frequent local travel and occasional regional travel will be required in this position. Evening and weekend hours will also be required in this position.

• Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU’s mission and department or work unit goals
• Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude
• Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action
• Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices
• Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff
• May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)
• May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist
• Provides guidance to students
