Abbie,
We had to apply to the Arkansas State Department of Education (ADE) to
become an authorized provider for professional development. Each state has
different requirements. Arkansas mandates that teachers have 2 in-service
hours in history of the 60 required annually. Since we are a history
museum, that's our focus. The topics for our professional development
workshops change based on curriculum guidelines and feedback from the
teachers and school administrators.

The ADE has specific guidelines about record keeping. I give individual
certificates to each teacher for their own records. Each school district
has a procedure for receiving credit. Most of the districts in northwest
Arkansas have a digital log for the teacher to enter their training, then
the principle has to approve the log, with final approval from the
district professional development coordinator.

I'd start by visiting your state department of education to find out their
guidelines, choose the grades you want to target and look at their
curriculum frameworks to choose a topic.

Good luck!

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Creating Professional Development Workshops for NY
Teachers

I am a Cooperstown Graduate Program student and I'm working on a project
to create professional development workshops for local teachers within a
museum setting. Does anyone have any suggestions for websites that explain
the certification process for teacher training workshops? How do I ensure
that the teacher's receive credit for their "in-service contact hours?"
I'd be incredibly grateful to hear any suggestions from museums that have
already established such programs. Thanks in advance!
Sincerely,
Abbie Wilson
