I've used MS Project and similar software called Project Kickstart (http://www.projectkickstart.com).  Kickstart is a little simpler than Project and worked pretty well for small to mid-sized projects.

One of the barriers to Project is usually it's retail cost, but if you are a 501(c)3 non-profit you can get it through TechSoup's DiscounTech software program (www.techsoup.org) for a handling fee.

I'd second Aaron's suggestion to check to see what your contractors are using...
