"BRINGING HERITAGE ALIVE THROUGH INTERPRETATION"
February 21 - 26, 2000 with Candace Tangorra Matelic
Cultural Resource Management Program, University of Victoria

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Effective interpretive programs provide audiences with opportunites to
engage with heritage resources in personal and meaningful ways. The
course examines the principles the shape the ways in which heritage sites and
museums communicate with their audiences, and the practices involved in
creating lively, relevant interpretive programs. Topics include:
*       shaping/sharing knowledge in heritage organizations
*       interpretation as a communication process
*       current approaches to learning in museums and heritage sites
*       accommodating audience needs, characteristics, and learning styles
*       reading and interpreting objects and sites
*       first and third person interpretation
*       multimedia approaches
*       planning, implementing, and evaluating programs
*       training and managing staff
*       issues of perspective, voice, and authenticity

INSTRUCTOR: Candace Matelic is a consultant in the management and
interpretation of heritage sites. She draws on her research in interpretive
techniques and practice and her experience as an educator and museum
director to explore current and innovative approaches to interpretation.
She began her museum career as an intepreter and has been involved with
intepretive programming at the Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village, the
Iowa Living History Farms, Old Sturbridge Village, the New York State
Historical Association and the Farmers' Museum, Mission Houses Museum in
Honolulu, and Historic St. Mary's City in Southern Maryland. As well,
Candace has consulted broadly in museum interpretation and has served as an
assessor for the American Association of Museums' MAP III Program in the
public dimension of museums. She taught interpretation/education in the
Coopertown Graduate Program in History Museum Studies.

DATES: February 21-26, with a preparatory assignment focussed on an
interpretive issue stemming from your workplace, community or readings.

* Refreshments & conversation at the Graduate Student Centre (optional)

Tuesday, February 22nd - Interpretive Skills & Awareness
* Interpretive Skills and Awareness Group Exercises
* Reading Objects using the Fleming Model
* Assignment: time capsule study

Wednesday, February 23rd - Tools for Developing Meaningful Interpretive Content
* Material Culture Exercises: time capsule, group object study, change
overtime, brown bag (Schroeder) activity
* Perspecivistic Interpretation: observation, group activities and whole
group discussion about using material culture skills and perspectivistic
interpretation to strengthen interpretive content

Thursday, February 24th - Tools for Developing Effective Interpretive Methods
* Changes in interpretive methods over the last 25 years
* Current Canadian and American interpretive planning strategies
* Strengths and weaknesses of various interpretive approaches
* Defining interpretive themes, storylines, and interpretive significance
* Application of information: developing an interpretation of a building on
the U-Vic campus (small groups)

Friday, February 25th  -  Tools in Context: Understanding Audience Needs &
Learning Styles
* Presentation of UVic campus building interpretations; discussion
* Responding to Audience Needs; current approaches to learning
* Group Discussions based on readings and previous experience
* Guidelines for Reviewing Public Programs; visitor studies and program
evaluation

Saturday, February 26th - Planning & Managing Successful Interpretive Programs
* Interpretive staff: position descriptions, recruitment, management,
performance appraisal
* Interpretive training: premises, curriculum materials, teaching approaches
* Successful interpretive planning: a system for implementation in a
teamwork context
* Discussion of lingering interpretive issues and unanswered questions;
Course wrap up.
