Before deciding on any one plan I highly recommend that all staff at your
site read "The Delicate Tasks of the Folklife/History Museum: Balancing the
Givens" by Edward L. Hawes found in Folklife and Museums: Selected Readings
an AASLH publication.

Subject: interpretive plan

Hi-

I am interested in hearing from people who have an interpretive plan they
could share with us.

Background: We are a county historical society that is (hopefully) on the
brink of building a new heritage center. The new site will be on a restored
oak savanna/prairie and there are already trails on the site. We will also
be moving a couple of historic structures out to the site, and there is a
historic archaeological site on the property. We will have new exhibits
inside (which we need to plan) and a library/research center.

We are just starting the process of developing an interpretive plan for our
institution as it prepares for the new site. It would be nice to have
examples of an interpretive plan to show our new programs committee what we
are aiming for. The plan will have to address collecting, exhibits, the
library/research center, programs (on-site and off-site), and incorporating
the new outdoor elements. In other words, what will people see, learn and do
at our site.

You can contact me off list. Thanks.
