Subject: Re: [MUSEUM-L] Conservation Horror Stories

Here's one that still gives me nightmares --

I was interviewing for a curator position at a Midwestern museum that
had a large collection of original WWI posters mounted on the wall about
18' from the ground. I asked why they weren't moved down to eye level.
The director told me that they had a former curator (he was actually a
janitor, but took it on himself to "curate" the exhibit) who wanted to
display them, but didn't have th authority to buy frames. So he
thumbtacked them to the top of the wall. When they started to curl
around the edges, he decided to glue them to the wall. I bet they're
still there!

This is the same "curator" who thought that the battle flags were too
tattered to display, so he threw them away after cutting out the center
motifs and glueing them to cardboard....

I guess I expressed my horror too vehemently, because I didn't get the
job!
