Response to "Headhunters" -- At Thomas & Associates, Inc., we provide
staffing, consulting and professional development training for museums
and art businesses nationwide. After working in museums both here and
abroad for many years, my experienced staff and I know the challenges of
the industry, and offer cost-effective services. Coming from the
industry provides immense value for our clients and candidates. We tend
to be client-driven, filling specific positions for our clients, but
keep an extensive databases of talent and positions all over the
country. Also, we prefer not to use the term "headhunter" -- a
perjorative term referring to some tribal peoples in the past. We are in
the search and recruitment business. All best, Cheers! Geri Thomas

Subject: Polishing silver

According to Katherine Singley, a Georgia objects conservator -- Orvus
paste or Ivory soap can remove light tarnish. If you have a heavier
tarnish accumulation on the silver, you can use 3M Tarni-Shield
(available at
Wal-mart) -- it is less toxic and the least abrasive of commercial
polishes and leaves behind a corrosion inhibitor. If you want to mix
your own, precipitated chalk is available from several conservation
supply stores online and some art supply stores. Be very careful when
cleaning pieces with artificial patination as a harsh tarnish remover
can damage the patination. Be sure to dry everything thoroughly; pieces
with hollow handles and feet can trap water and magnify your corrosion
issues. Store them in Rubbermaid tubs, wrapped in felt or pacificloth
bags with a Haggerty's silver strip or silica gel pouches inside --
you'll polish less when you get ready to exhibit.

Subject: Re: cleaning silver

Dave,

Just out of curiousity, I remember a lady in my old church who had a
silver cleaning pan which was I think made of magnesium. I forget what
you fill it with but all you had to do was dunk your silver and it came
out clean. I think she also used like borax and aluminum mixed together
in a glass jar which did something similar.

Do you know of these methods and would they be safe for historic pieces?

Thanks!

Subject: Re: cleaning silver

Deb,

What you describe is electrochemical cleaning, where you set up a
galavanic reaction between two dissimilar metals in the electromotive
series in an electrolyte solution to allow the current to flow. The
metal that is the cathode (-) will become stripped and if the reaction
is allowed to continue then it can actually erode tiny pits and holes
into the metal. This technique is used sometimes in conservation but
very carefully and only usually for more problematic metal treatments,
as it is more aggressive, and actually destroys patina, and can cause
uneven surface appearance. Often silver treated this way will have a
dull matte appearance and is then polished again to try to restore the
bright surface. By using this technique you are essentially exposing
fresh atoms of metal to the air to react and reoxidize or corrode, as
any stable oxides have been removed. This also tends to destroy historic
surfaces. We control this technique in conservation by using applied DC
current via a DC power unit with fine controls - so we can locally
electrolytically clean a very aggressive spot of corrosion with a
handheld electrode, for example, or do the overall cleaning but at a
much lower current that is monitored and adjusted. I am much more likely
to employ this on a problematicve iron, tinplate, or bronze piece than I
even am on a silver object.

Basically, this is nothing I would really advise someone to mess with
unless they have some non-collections, non-heirloom metal objects in the
garage that they want to play with. Usually the electrolytes are caustic
so you've got to wear rubber gloves and you also have a hazardous
disposal issue too.

Cheers!

Fellow Listers and Collections Managers:

Having seen a recent reference to Bruce MacLeisch's The Care of Antiques
and Historical Collections (Nashville: AASLH Press, 1985), I would
suggest reading Barbara Appelbaum's Guide to the Environmental
Protection of Collections (Madison, CT: Sound View Press, 1991), which
I've found to be equally helpful for small institutions. As a former
student, I refer to it often. For silver, Appelbaum recommends using a
commercial liquid or paste cleaning polish followed by careful rinsing.
Chemical "dips" such as Tarnex are too aggressive, and as we've seen
from David Harvey, the magnesium pan and powdered laundry detergent, can
lead to surface damage. At one time, the conservation staff at the
Cooperstown Graduate Program recommended the use of a product called
Never Dull, which is a chemical impregnated in cotton wadding. I've
used the latter for twenty years with success and have seen no apparent
harm.

I am looking for institutions with both Registrars and Collections
Managers.
Currently, my museum only has registrars, but a number of institutions
that I have been researching have both positions. Unfortunately, I
haven't been able to locate job descriptions for the two positions. I
am trying to get a feel for how job duties are divided between the two
positions and what additional ones may be added.
Would anyone be able to provide me with some job descriptions?

Thanks,
Carrie

Carrie:

My institution has both positions. In a nutshell, our Registrars do
just, they register the collections. Our Collection Managers manage the
collections in terms of movement and storage. We also have an
acquisitions officer who facilitates an acquisition and deals with all
the legal issues associated with that.

I will try and drum up some job descriptions for you.

Patti

France Extends a Cultural Hand to Arts Projects in New Orleans by Carol
= Vogel, New York Times, November 1, 2005 To show support for the city
of New Orleans, the French culture minister, = Renaud Donnedieu de
Vabres, and the president of the Louvre, Henri = Loyrette, are planning
to visit New Orleans on Friday to announce a series = of cultural
initiatives. Among the projects expected to be announced is an =
exhibition of some 50 works of art lent by the Louvre to the New Orleans
= Museum of Art for an exhibition tentatively scheduled for late 2006 or
= early 2007.=20 Neither officials in New Orleans nor those at the
French Consulate in New = York would confirm details of the exhibition,
but Deborah de la Houssaye, = an artistic attach=E9 at the French
Consulate in New Orleans, confirmed = that the New Orleans Museum has
requested works spanning the Louvre's = collection. Talks between the
two museums are in progress, she said, so it = is too early to say what
specific art will come to New Orleans or exactly = when the exhibition
will take place.=20 Meanwhile, French officials in New York said that
the French government = was planning to help restore the National D-Day
Museum in New Orleans and = support the area's schools and
universities.=20 As soon as Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, the
French government sent a = team of military divers and one of the
world's largest aircrafts, the = Airbus Beluga, to New Orleans to
deliver about 20 tons of emergency = supplies. In addition, French
companies and their American subsidiaries = have contributed $18.5
million to the city of New Orleans. French government officials are
expected to announce on Friday specific = details of other cultural
initiatives, including a program to help = musicians by sponsoring a
concert featuring the French singer Francis = Cabrel and the Louisiana
singer and songwriter Zachary Richard at the = Palais des Congr=E8s in
Paris on Nov. 7. They hope the concert will raise = more than $130,000
for Louisiana musicians. The Ministry of Foreign = Affairs and the
Ministry of Culture and Communications, along with French = musical
institutions, will also be creating residencies for musicians from = New
Orleans. Starting Dec. 1, four musicians will be given apartments and =
stipends enabling them to work in Paris, and in January 15 other
residences= throughout France will be provided for musicians.=20

Hi All:=20

=20

I am looking to purchase a few table top display cases for
archaeological artifacts that will be used primarily for off-site
displays (at conferences, educational events and so forth), and would
greatly value any recommendations for suppliers.=20

=20

Since the cases will be used to house artifacts only temporarily, I am
not super concerned about archival issues. Sturdiness or durability is
more of a concern, so I am looking for something more substantial than,
say, Riker boxes - something more along the lines of the flat top
locking showcases shown here:
http://www.storefixtures2000.com/images/pio1463a.jpg and here
http://www.storefixtures2000.com/Acrylic/Showcases/ac_sc_countertop.htm=

=20

I'm a bit overwhelmed by the plethora of vendors out there, and the
seeming variability in the quality of products, so any advice you all
might have is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Dear List Members:

I have just recently heard about a museum registrarial program called
Embark. Can anyone speak to the advantages or disadvantages of using
this program over Past Perfect or Filemaker Pro?

Thanks!

I have a question put to me by someone at a small local archive. Would
i= t would be better to scan their documents or to put them on
microfilm? = Her concern is that they do not have the money to keep up
with the techn= ology involved in scanning. What do other small
museums/archives do? If= you have your documents microfilmed, is it
something that you do yourse= lf or do you hire someone to come in and
do it for you? You can respond privately to me at [log in to unmask]
Thanks!

Are there any list members that can help authenticate a carved skull,
presumably of Tibetan origin? I have not had much luck translating the
script, so it
could be from Bhutan instead.

Any advice will be appreciated. Please reply off list.

BIBLES AND BULLETS
Cody Clark / The Daily Herald
Saturday, October 29, 2005 (page B1)

The annual Spiritual and Religious Art of Utah exhibit at the
Springville Museum of Art has a tendency to inspire strong feelings.
"This show is always a little controversial," said museum director Vern
Swanson. Religious and spiritual convictions, he said, are not something
that many people regard lightly. To say the least.

One piece that may or may not be displayed during this year's exhibit
has already caused controversy. It's a sculpture that consists of an oil
drum, a Koran and a Bible. That in itself might be enough to make some
people hot beneath the collar, but the artist has gone one step further
-- the Koran contains a bomb, while the Bible is filled with bullets.

The piece, by Logan resident Adam Bradshaw, is called "Improper Use May
Result in Injury or Death."

Swanson said that "Improper Use" is "tough," and that the museum tries
to "not allow artists to be disrespectful of others' faiths." The fact
that the piece doesn't indict one religion more than the other is in
large part what convinced jurors to accept it for the show.

"If it was just the Koran or just the Bible," said Swanson, "I don't
think we would have" chosen to display it.

And visitors to the exhibit may not have the opportunity to judge the
piece's merits for themselves. Because it is a non-profit,
community-sponsored organization, the museum has an executive board that
has final approval regarding potentially offensive exhibits. But even if
the board agrees with the jurors, the work in question might not be in
the show for long.

"If the board accepts it and the public doesn't," said Swanson, "we
would probably take it down."

Swanson said that artists often assert controversial opinions in work
submitted for the Spiritual and Religious Art show. "It's almost like an
editorial show," he said.

Frank McEntire, a Salt Lake City sculptor who has two pieces in the
show, said that everything he does expresses his opinions about the
world. Almost all of his art, he said, explores "contemporary life
issues involving politics, the environment, intersections where commerce
meets values systems."

Provo resident J. Kirk Richards, a painter, said that he generally
doesn't have a specific message in mind when he paints. On the other
hand, Richards said, "I think it's appropriate for an artist to use art
any way that he or she wants. That's their prerogative."
