DIRECTOR, JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER, JR. LIBRARY, Colonial Williamsburg, Williamsburg, Virginia.

The COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG FOUNDATION seeks a Director of a research library specializing in early American history, culture, and the decorative arts.

REQUIREMENTS: The successful candidate will come from a background in library or archives management and preferably will hold an MLS degree from an  ALA-accredited library school. His or her training and experience must have matured into a strong and gifted library administrator.  Equally important, she or he must be an historian of the 18th century, preferably English or American
history.  We are not looking for a working scholar, but the director must be a match for the research historians, and other knowledgeable readers who are the library's primary users. The job also requires the skills of a lively writer, an engaging public speaker, a trusted friend of collectors, a successful fund raiser and someone who has experience with library automation and/or digital libraries.  Since Colonial Williamsburg has become a national leader in educating the public about slavery and African American history; this opening affords a fully qualified African American librarian an unusual opportunity to participate in this important work.

The Director is responsible for the operations, personnel and resources of the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library and the Folk Art Library.  He/she administers the Rockefeller Library?s budget, sets library goals and policy, and represents the library in administrative matters.  The Director also chairs the Library Management Group, which is comprised of section heads.  The Director reports to the Vice President for Research.

SALARY RANGE: Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Please note this position is currently being reviewed for a salary upgrade.

The John D.  Rockefeller, Jr. Library, opened in 1997, and is an essential component of the Bruton Heights School Education Center.  It represents a forty-year effort to collect in one location the Foundation?s information resources on the history and culture of the colonial Chesapeake region.  The Library provides research materials on history, archaeology, architecture and the decorative arts for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation staff, scholars and visitors.
