If you decide to get a master's degree in art history and know that you want to work in a museum, I would recommend going to a program that has a strong museum studies component. Tufts, for instance, offers a museum studies certificate along with the MA in art history, and the
program at Case Western Reserve University has a strong relationship with the Cleveland Museum of Art. I have done everything for my PhD in art history but the dissertation, but I went through a program that was much more focused on academia. I had the opportunity to do a museum
internship but found it frustrating that most of my classes were geared toward academic art history. It also seems that faculty in programs that train people to be academic art historians can't offer as much guidance (and help you network) when you're trying to find a museum job.
