Vice President, Development/Institutional Advancement 

 

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is the nation's premier destination of heroism, adventure and fun, hosting over 750,000 visitors from around the world each year. Through the museum's exhibits, educational programming and special events, visitors experience her rich history of service and learn about the humanity behind the hardware.  The Intrepid Museum is gearing up for the re-opening of our new and improved museum complex for 2008.  This is a great opportunity to be a part of our exciting team!  

 

We are seeking to fill the newly created position of Vice President, Development.  S/he will be responsible for creating a development department that oversees corporate fundraising and foundation relations, annual support, major/individual gifts, planned giving, membership and, in collaboration with others, capital fund raising and Board development. The VP, Development will strategize, direct and oversee all private fund raising initiatives, including annual unrestricted and program operating support, as well as ongoing capital and endowment campaigns.

 

The successful candidate must be seen as expert in his/her field. S/he must be an outgoing self-starter with solid marketing skills who is energetic, persistent and creative and has outstanding presentation and influencing skills. The Vice President, Development should be a strong communicator who possesses a true commitment to the Intrepid's mission and has the ability to lead a team with flexibility and equanimity.

 

The ideal candidate will possess the following: 

*	Proven track record in shaping and supervising organizational communications for fundraising constituencies and creating/executing complex, multi-leveled fundraising programs
*	Proven success in asking for and closing major gifts and building and maintaining long-term relationships with major individual donors, foundations and corporations
*	Demonstrated ability to build effective teams and to lead a complex development program that maximizes the effectiveness of professional development staff and which incorporates membership and other departments
*	Organizational skills in implementing multiple projects, setting priorities and deadlines, and ensuring program accountability
*	Extensive knowledge of fundraising software
*	Experience in creating and implementing a development department and in bringing an institution's fundraising capacity to the next level of effectiveness 

 

Minimum ten (10) year's experience in Institutional Advancement or Development positions and a familiarity with the New York City marketplace and the ability to identify high net worth individuals, and other corporate and foundation prospects, are essential.
