Dear Ms. McCauley:
I would not recommend pressure-sensitive adhesive-backed foam board, as
it often fails. Apparently, the adhesive is less effective with age, and you
never know how old it is. A better attachment method is double-faced
adhesive sheets, such as Redi-mount or Mactac (s.p.?). They do not allow
repositioning once down, but you can pull one liner sheet off, then put it
back on off-set so one sticky edge shows. Then you only expose a small part
of the sheet and can line it up on an edge, press it down, and then
gradually withdraw the liner sheet, exposing a little more adhesive at a
time. It helps if you are attaching something flexible (like paper) to also
brush with a clean drafting brush away from the original stuck-down edge as
you go. This usually prevents bubbles of air getting trapped between the
layers. Once everything is down, you can then burnish with a large, soft
plastic burnisher, or even a fist-sized piece of matboard. Burnish from the
middle outward toward the edges. I don't know if this material is acid-free,
so if that's an issue, consult a conservator before using it. Good luck!

Cordially,
